Quickie:
System Shock is a 1994 Role Playing Game with a rich detailed story and a lot of fun! You're a hacker, caught in the act and offered a chance to hack one of the most intelligent AI's in exchange for your freedom and a cyberspace interface. You accept the offer. Sleeping through the recovery of the installation... you wake up into a nightmare where the computer AI, SHODAN, believes she is God.
Graphics: 8.2
An amazing score for a 15 year old game. While characters are still sprites, this is one of the first games to use 3D models.
Sounds: 7.8
Very immersive sound.. Some sound levels are inappropriate, but a superb job all the way.
Gameplay: 8.3
System Shock uses a near unique blend of keyboard and mouse not seen in any other game that I know of.
Fun: 8.8
Once I start playing... I almost can never put it down until it's finished.
Presentation: 8.3
The interface is extremely well laid out, and customizable.
Technology: 9
When System Shock was released, it was ahead of it's time. 15 years later, games STILL haven't caught up to all the things System shock does in one package!
Overall: 8.8
Longer Review:
This was the first game I ever played to use 3D models... And for that matter, 3D acceleration! Not bad for a game from 1994. this game allows for much greater skill selection... Where most games just give you "Easy/Medium/Hard",. this lets you have a much greater custom control of the skill. You may set any of the four categories to easy/med/hard or off. for instance, you can disable combat, or make combat harder, or easier, while keeping the storyline the same... or you can make the story easier! I kept everything on medium.
Pro's:
VERY advanced control interface. Most games give you six buttons of controls. Directions, jump, and duck. Sometimes they throw in turning for 8 controls. System shock gives you directions, jump, duck, run, lean, crawl, and any combination's for over 5000 different movements!
Full rich story with voice acting!
Cons:
You can't adjust the controls =( But... Most games from this era didn't have that ability.
